Andy grew up in a card playing family in Port Chester, NY. Canasta, cribbage, Russian bank, pitch and casino were some of the favorite games. While he was in the service, a poker playing friend introduced him to bridge and after reading his first bridge book he was addicted. While averaging about four hours of bridge a day he somehow managed to graduate from Albany State University with a degree in business. Andy became a life master in 1974. Playing in his first National tournament that summer in New York, his 127th seeded team upset the #2 seeded team in the first round of the Spingold team championship. He played in the early rounds of the Lancia Bridge Challenge in 1975, was a monitor for the World Championships in Rye, NY in 1981, played in the international challenge of the sexes in 1985, and the World Championships in Philadelphia in 2010. He has been featured in a number of newspaper bridge columns including two by Alan Truscott in the New York Times and recently in Frank Stewart’s nationally syndicated column. He served for three years as the vice president of the Vermont Bridge Association and now teaches almost full time on every level of bridge from small private sessions to large group classes. He is a professional player and a firm believer that absolutely knowing the fundamentals of bridge will make you a much better player than learning a number of conventions that require more memory and do not occur very often.
“I’ve known Andy for 40 years – he is one of the best teachers and most personable players in the game of bridge” – Larry Cohen
